Columbia, S.C. (March 20, 2009) – The 2009 Class of Leadership South Carolina launched its Hunger Never Takes a Break Campaign on March 19 to raise funds for the state’s four regional food banks. The campaign is a call to action for monetary donations that will help feed more than 13 percent of the state’s population that lives in poverty.

The goal of the Hunger Never Takes a Break campaign is to raise $100,000, representing 1 million meals, by June 1, 2009, to restock the state’s food banks.

Food banks are experiencing unprecedented demand because of the declining economy. In addition, when schools are closed for holidays and vacations, families experience difficulty meeting food needs because children do not receive a free or subsidized breakfast and lunch. For many children the meals served in school are the only meals they eat.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to work with such talented leaders from around the state in our effort to end hunger in South Carolina,” said Jermaine Husser, President of the South Carolina Food Bank Association. “The LSC class of ’09 is helping us put hunger and poverty at the top of the agenda for action in our state,” noted Husser. During the kick off campaign, class members from across the state volunteered on March 19 at the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia.
